UFC 90 Nearing Record Gate
Written by Jaime Martinez
Tuesday, 19 August 2008
By the time that UFC President Dana White and company held a presser in Chicago on Monday, 80% of the Allstate Arena’s tickets for the October 25th event have been sold.

Located in Rosemont, Illinois, the Allstate Arena’s current record-holder for live gate revenue is the WWE with their Wrestlemania event raking in $2.4 million. Current figures for ticket sales for UFC 90 are at about $2 million. The figure is even more impressive considering the fact that the promotion’s debut in Illinois is still over a month away.

Given the current rate of ticket sales, White stated that he expects the previous gate record to be broken sometime today. He went on to cite the Midwest – and Chicago in particular – as a strong market for the UFC’s pay-per-view events. As a result, White mentioned the possibility of going back to the Windy City once a year for a live event.

UFC 90 will be headlined by a middleweight title defense, as pound-for-pound MMA juggernaut Anderson “The Spider” Silva faces Patrick “The Predator” Côté. Co-headlining the night will be a welterweight title elimination match between The Ultimate Fighter, Season 1 winner Diego “The Nightmare” Sánchez against Thiago “Pitbull” Alves.

Other match-ups announced for the main card include lightweight clashes between Tyson Griffin and Sean Sherk, as well as Spencer Fisher and Melvin Guillard.

Thales Leites and Goran Reljic will square off in a middleweight tilt, while Hermes Franca and Gleison Tibau both seek redemption after coming off losses to Joe Stevenson and Frankie Edgar, respectively.

Ricardo Almeida will look to be back on the winning track after a decision loss to Côté when he faces UFC newcomer and former IFL Middleweight Champion Matt “Suave” Horwich.

Other participants added without confirmed opponents include heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga and welterweight Mike Swick, who is still recouperating from minor elbow surgery after his win against Marcus Davis at UFC 85.
