Scott Smith apparently broke his hand in the first round against Robbie Lawler, this according to the Carmichael Dave Show in Sacramento, California. This phenomenon could explain the tentative behavior of Smith in the secound round that led to him being trapped on the cage and on the receiving end of the vicious knee to the ribs, putting the UFC veteran out of the fight.

Robbie Lawler did receive a gash on the top of his head from the elbows that Scott was throwing and according to Mr. Smith, he was "waiting for someone else to end the fight."

Whether or not the broken hand or the gash allowed for the tentative behavior, the results remain the same and Robbie Lawler continues to be the EliteXC champion. There is no news on how long the broken hand will keep him out of action but he is reportedly scheduled for surgery on Wednesday.
