Fight Line’s Jason Perkins is citing The New York Times’ Michael Pope’s report that both the television network and the Las Vegas-based promotion are possibly in discussions to broadcast live MMA fights.
Though the story is brief, Perkins alludes to supposed dissatisfaction at CBS with the ratings that “Saturday Night Fights’” second installment – which featured a rematch between EliteXC Middleweight Champion Robbie Lawler and challenger Scott Smith, as well as Nick Diaz taking on Thomas Denny and broadcasted live from Diaz’s hometown of Stockton, California – saw a large decrease from their debut offering.
The third installment of “Saturday Night Fights - Heat” will feature ratings-winners Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson taking on MMA veteran Ken Shamrock in what could otherwise be classified as a ‘shot-in-the-dark’ attempt to revive ratings as well as Gina Carano as she squares off against Kelly Cobold-Gavin. After an eyebrow-raising performance by Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos over a very game Shayna Baszler at the aforementioned event in Stockton, fans began to clamor for a Santos / Carano match-up.
The event will be shown live from the BankAtlantic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on CBS on October 4th.
Additional match-ups announced for the CBS portion of the event include a welterweight title defense as champion Jake Shields will face off against Paul “Semtex” Daley. A middleweight tilt featuring IFL veteran Benji Radach and former PRIDE FC star Murilo “Ninja” Rua will kick off the broadcast television event. |
