Joe Riggs (27 – 10) was not cleared to fight Luke Stewart (5 – 1) by officials from the California State Athletic Commission due to disclosing the prescribed usage of Percocet. As a result, Drew Fickett (34 – 5) has agreed to step in for Friday night’s bout.
Riggs’ last fight was in February, where he lost after injuring his back via hip toss from Cory Devela. The injury led to yet another spinal injury for the rugged veteran fighter. Riggs’ sciatic nerve in his back was relieved in his latest surgery.
Ken Pavia, who serves as Riggs’ manager, told MMA Junkie that Riggs let CSAC officials know that the last date of his consuming the medication was three days prior, and that there was a chance that traces of the drug would not show up on the drug screening. MMA Junkie is also reporting that Riggs was never given the option to take a drug screening prior to the weigh-in.
Fickett is seeking his sixth straight win as he faces off against Stewart. He drew the ire of Pro Elite officials when he withdrew from a June 14th title fight against Jake Shields, yet fought at a Rage in the Cage event on June 7th. His last fight with Strikeforce was a first round submission win against Jae Suk Lim.
The card will be broadcast live this Friday on HDNet from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California and will be headlined by a lightweight championship bout between Gilbert Melendez and Josh Thomson. Former The Ultimate Fighter cast member Bobby Southworth will defend his light heavyweight title against Anthony Ruiz, and Bay Area favorites Nam Phan and Billy Evangelista will face off. |
