Although bereft of any Kimbo action, the EliteXC "Unfinished Business" went off with a bang. 3 championships were determined (2 on CBS - one on Showtime), many punches were thrown, and a submission was slapped on to round out the event. Not one of the CBS-aired fights went to decision and led up to a very fast night.
The women fighters led off the evening and it was fists flying from the start. Shayna tried for a couple takedowns and leg locks but Cris always scrambled up and then used her superior striking to eventually knock down Shayna in the second round. Cris celebrated by jumping onto the cage prematurely as the referee didn't stop the match and Shayna was given time to recover. Regardless of the miscue, Cris got the second knock down and the fight ended.
Jake Shields finally had the chance to claim the welterweight title after months of waiting. Jake didn't waste any time, sticking to his bread and butter and immediately taking down the striker Nick Thompson. He maintained his position in mount and after some shrimping and squirming from Nick, Jake slapped on a guillotine and choked out his opponent.
Thomas Denny did some smack talking of his own and for the first round he delivered in the action arena. Both Nick and Thomas exchanged sloppily but near the end of the round Thomas visibly tired and the bell managed to save the pink-haired fighter. Nick came out in the second round sensing the blood in the water and finished off his tired opponent.
The fight of the evening came when both Robbie and Scott met for the middleweight championship. Robbie started off tentative but gained strength throughout the match. Scott tried to match Robbie's intensity with some great elbows and even managed to cut Lawler in the second round on the top of his head. While resting however, Robbie got the plumb clinch and landed some knees that buckled Smith, leading to a victory.
The production was much smoother for this event as the promotion crew ironed out the wrinkles from the first iteration. Already, EliteXC is talking an Oct. 4th date for CBS and the next "Saturday Night Fights" but it remains to be seen what the ratings were for the Kimbo-less event.
